This initiative aims to bring light and hope to the lives of young people whose paths were darkened by addiction to dangerous drugs, by helping them return to a normal and meaningful life through voluntary rehabilitation.
The event was held under the patronage of the Hon. Speaker of the Parliament of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka, Dr. Jagath wickramaratha and Hon. Harshana Nanayakkara, Minister of Justice and National Integration at the invitation of Senior Professor wasantha Subasinghe, Chairperson of the Bureau of Rehabilitation and Brigadier M.S. Amith, the Commissioner General of Rehabilitation.
Distinguished guests included Hon. T.B. Sarath, District Coordinating Committee Chairman and Deputy Minister of Housing, Construction and Water Supply; Hon. Sunil Ratnasiri and Hon. Padmasiri Bandara, Members of Parliament for the Polonnaruwa District; Mrs. E.M.D.S. Ekanayake, District Secretary of Polonnaruwa; Mr. T.M. Irfan, Divisional Secretary of Welikanda; and Major General J.S.B.W. Pallekumbura, Commander of the Security Forces Headquarters (East), along with several other distinguished invitees.
A special Attitude and Skills Development Center, designed to enhance the attitudes and skills of the rehabilitees, was also declared open during the event.
At this facility, individuals who voluntarily seek rehabilitation are provided by the government with free food, accommodation, and all necessary facilities to successfully transition to a drug-free life. Following a three-month rehabilitation program, the rehabilitees will be reintegrated into society.
After the ceremony, the Hon. Speaker and other distinguished guests engaged in an inspection tour of the Nawodawa Treatment Center at Senapura, where they also held discussions regarding the future activities of the center.
